Bonus over George Herbert

SOPHOCLES and ANTIGONE

Sophocles was born in 495 B.C. He was one of the great playwrights in the ancient period. His father name was Sophilus, a man of wealth and excellent character. He gave Sophocles his literary accomplishments. At the age of sixteen he was chosen to lead a boys choir at a celebration of the victory of Salamis. In his dramatic career, Sophocles competed in a tragic contest against Aeschylus and won first place. He continued to display tragedies and drama. Sophocles wrote about 108 plays during his time. He won around 18 to 24 first place prizes and numerous of second place prize spots. It is said his plays were distinguished by close connection, the correctness of their sentiments, and the beauty of their lives. His language was sometimes harsh but for the most part, he was a man of wealth and
genius. In Sophocles Antigone, everyone is held responsible for the decisions they made. All of the characters suffer because of Creons' belief. Antigone buries Polynices knowing she would be put to death if caught. Antigone was determined to give her brother a proper burial regardless of the law so she took matters in her own hands. Antigone broke the law of Creon by fulfilling the law of the Gods. When the time came around for Antigone to be put to death, Tiresias tells Creon that the Gods agreed with Antigone. Creon went to bury Polynices but before he made it back to Antigone, she had already hung herself. Haemon ( son of Creon) and Antigones' lover, embraced and wept over Antigone body. When Creon seen his son he tried to comfort him but Haemon, attacked Creon and then kills himself. Truly this was a fascinating play. Eventhough the women back then was not regarded high at all, Antigone showed us a different side. Antigone died a true hero.

Romeo and Juliet Love Story

SHAKESPEARE ROMEO AND JULIET
This 1996 film starring Leonardo Dicarpio(Romeo) and Clair Danes(Juliet) is about two teenagers that falls in love but their families the Capulets and the Montagues have been enemies for a long time. Romeo and Juliet fell madly in love with one another at a ball Capulet gave. All the drama between the two families caused their relationship to end in death. Juliet faked her death hoping Romeo would come and rescue her. She was placed in the Capulets burial vault. Romeo thought she was dead so he drunk poison and died beside her. Juliet killed herself with his dagger after she seen him dead. Baz Luhrmann directed a film adaption. Luhrmann adaption demonstates young teenagers love for one another during this time. These two young lovers died together. This movie was so good especially since the cute Leonardo was one of the cast members. Both Leonardo and Clair did a wonderful job playing their parts. The film had its ups and downs. When Romeo learned of Juliet death he went overboard. The review stated that Leonardo will never be the real Romeo, but he played the part well. Luhrmann did a wonderful job in the adaption of the film; he put some of his own ideas in the scripts. He made the film his own. He was not trying to be William Shakespeare, he just wanted the film adaption to be a success.

SHAKESPEARE'S OTHELLO
The play Othello is a dramatic tragedy. In the play Iago seeks revenge on Othello for not choosing him as lieutenant. Iago knew that Othello was insecure in some areas, so he makes him believe his wife Desdemona is cheating on him with Cassio. The lies that Iago tells Othello about Desdemona's affection toward Cassio turns him into a jealous rage. Iago wife Emilia gives him the hankerchief that Desdemona lost so he uses that to frame her. Othello kills Desdemona because he believs she was unfaithful. Emilia told Othello the truth about her husband plot. So Othello goes and wound Iago. Iago kills Emilia for telling Othello the truth about him and Othello kills himself beacuse he found out his wife was innocent. After Iago killed his wife Emilia he was carried away in chains and Cassio became governor. This play was very intersting and sad at the same time. I believe that is how many people get caught up in the moment because they listen to others and not t
rusting their mate. It is good to know your mate, because one never know when a so called close friend, is out to get them.THE GLOBE THEATER
